The Montorgueil – Les Halles neighborhood is a central neighborhood that extends over the 1st and 2nd arrondissements. It starts on the Quai de la Mégisserie on the banks of the Seine. Place du Châtelet, there are two prestigious theaters here, the Théâtre de la Ville and the Théâtre du Châtelet. To the west, at the foot of the Pont-Neuf – to be seen for its mosaic facades – a former large department store, “La Samaritaine,” a magnificent building dating back to 1900, which had the slogan “You can find everything at La Samaritaine.” Crossing the rue de Rivoli, you come to the Forum des Halles, a vast underground shopping center, which is currently undergoing a tranformation. The Eglise Saint-Eustache and its garden are hidden behind Les Halles. Another sight to be seen is the Bourse du Commerce, a circular building topped with a glass dome. The rue Montorgueil begins at the Eglise Saint-Eustache, and is one of the rare cobblestone streets of Paris. You can find plenty to eat here. Since access to cars is very restricted, it is an ideal place to take advantage of the terraces of the different cafés and restaurants in the area. You will also find vintage and trendy stores here. The adjacent streets, like the rue Tiquetonne and the rue Greneta are home to many designer boutiques. To the north, in the 2nd arrondissement, is the Sentier neighborhood, an area dedicated to the clothing industry. Here the shop windows are aimed at professionals, but sometimes retail sales are permitted. It is a very pleasant and lively neighborhood in the evening, ideal to have a drink and do some shopping, and is very well served by metros and buses.
